Amman, Asharq Al-Awsat- approximately 5,000 Iraqis have been entering Jordan every day this week, since Jordan began easing restrictions on movement over the Karama border crossing, located some 350km east of Amman .

Sources from the Jordanian border authorities told Asharq Al-Awsat that the number of Iraqis entering Jordan on a daily basis before the new regulations were put in place on Saturday was 2,000.

The traffic of trucks and passengers vehicles has also increased considerably since Saturday.

Meanwhile, international organizations are urging Jordan to open its borders to allow the entry of refugees, especially Palestinians.

Jordan was the first neighboring country of Iraq to open its borders to allow refugees from Iraq entry for humanitarian reasons. However, the government insisted refugees not stay permanently.

The Washington post reported earlier this year that Jordanian border police were turning away hundreds of Iraqi vehicles daily at the Karama border crossing. At Queen Alia International Airport, just south of Jordan’s capital, Amman, Iraqi passengers are ushered into a room and interrogated before being allowed to enter the country.

The security restrictions being applied to Iraqis stem from the bombings of three Amman hotels on Nov. 9. Three Iraqi suicide bombers carried out the attacks, which killed 59 people, most of them Jordanians
