GAZA, (Reuters) – Israeli troops killed three Palestinian gunmen in the northern part of the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip on Tuesday near a border crossing with Israel, Palestinian health officials and the Israeli army said.

Islamic Jihad and a militant group belonging to the Fatah faction said three of their fighters were killed while trying to attack an army base near the Erez crossing. An Israeli army spokeswoman said the gunmen were hit from the air and by ground forces near the border fence.

Israel, which pulled troops and settlers out of Gaza in 2005, regularly launches raids which it says target militants responsible for cross-border rocket fire and other attacks.
