BAGHDAD, (AP) – An Iraqi lawmaker says initial projections show the prime minister’s allies are the big winners in last week’s provincial elections.

The lawmakers says Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki’s Coalition of the State of Law won sweepingly in 10 of the 14 provinces where elections were held Saturday.

Abbas al-Bayati spoke to the Associated Press Television News on Wednesday. He didn’t give a basis for his claim — which couldn’t be confirmed — but political parties have monitored the counting process.

Al-Bayati also says the coalition will reach out to other parties for an alliance in those provinces where it didn’t win, primarily in southern Iraq.

Early unofficial results from the provincial elections were expected Thursday.
