BAGHDAD (AP) – U.S. troops detained six suspected insurgents Tuesday during raids targeting al-Qaeda in Iraq in Baghdad and to the north of the capital, the military said.
A man accused of being an associate of an insurgent leader and of providing direction for all the al-Qaeda networks in Baghdad, including cells responsible for suicide and car bombing attacks, was captured in the capital, the military said. The suspect also allegedly helped senior terror leaders move around and avoid detection in the area.
American troops also seized an alleged leader of al-Qaeda in Iraq and another suspected insurgent southeast of Samarra, a Sunni stronghold 95 kilometers (60 miles) north of Baghdad, the military said.
The main suspect in that raid was believed to be involved in kidnappings and in helping to obtain funds for attacks, as well as arranging meetings between senior level insurgent leaders along the Tigris River Valley to discuss al-Qaeda operations, according to a statement.
Two other suspected insurgents were detained in Mosul during an operation targeting a senior leader for al-Qaeda in northern Iraq, the military said. The northwestern city is believed to be the last major urban stronghold for the terror network in Iraq and U.S. and Iraqi forces have been cracking down in the area.
