London, Asharq Al-Awsat- A leading figure in the Supreme Islamic Iraqi Council [SIIC] has denied that its leaders had discussed any name as a candidate to lead the SIIC instead of Abdulaziz al-Hakim. Rida Jawad Taqiy, member of the SIIC’s Central Shura Council, said Ammar, Abdulaziz’s son, was Taqiy asserted in a statement to Asharq Al-Awsat by telephone from Baghdad yesterday that Al-Hakim received in Tehran the day before yesterday the second dose of chemotherapy to destroy the cancerous tumor which appeared in his lung recently and added that “the results of the first doze were excellent and good. The doctors treating him are optimistic.”

He went on to say: “This is why we did not discuss the issue of who will succeed Al-Hakim since he is in good health, attended all the meetings of SIIC and the Iraqi Unified Coalition which he (Al-Hakim) chairs, and received Iraqi leaders, politicians, and figures during his stay in Baghdad and was very responsive and active in these meetings.”

Taqiy said on the other hand that “Ammar al-Hakim is at present in New York to discuss including the Shahid al-Mihrab Foundation which he chairs as member of the UN’s educational organizations after attending several meetings for that purpose. Al-Hakim will hopefully meet the UN secretary general, who will deliver a speech at a meeting to be attended by 200international figures, to discuss the issue of including Shahid al-Mihrab Foundation as a member.” He stressed that “Ammar al-Hakim’s visit has no connections with political matters.”
