BAGHDAD (Reuters) -Iraq has decided to hold a referendum on the country”s draft constitution on October 15, the head of the Independent Electoral Commission of Iraq (IECI) said on Thursday.
"We studied a decision made by the National Assembly suggesting that October 15 be the date of the referendum, we agreed on that and the date is set," Hussein al-Hindawi told Reuters.
The draft, adopted by the Shi”ite- and Kurdish-dominated parliament despite objections from some minority Sunni Arabs, was on its way to the printers and will later be circulated among Iraqi voters, officials said.
Sunni Arabs opposed the draft constitution mainly over its vision of a strongly federal political system.
