Basra, Asharq Al-Awsat- A committee has been formed in Basra to supervise the management of Al-Shu’aybah jail in Basra Governorate that is under the British forces’ control and to follow up the detainees’ humanitarian affairs following protests by the detainees and their relatives of the human rights violations and the denial of the detainees’ legitimate rights.

Mahdi al-Tamimi, director of the Human Rights office in the southern region, told “Asharq al-Awsat” that Al-Shu’aybah jail is under British management and the largest one after the Buka jail in the Umm Qasr desert. According to last week’s statistics, the Buka jail holds 4,200 prisoners and is under US administration and no Iraqi party outside the joint committees has the right to intervene in the prisoners’ affairs. He pointed to the recent increase in protests against the violations of the detainees’ civil rights in Al-Shu’aybah jail and the governorate public opinion’s protest against these violations through the governorate council.

The committee to supervise Al-Shu’aybah jail includes representatives of the justice, human rights, interior ministries and the governorate. Visits to the detainees are scheduled to take place during the blessed Al-Adha Feast holidays and their relatives will be permitted to visit them.
