Human Rights Organization Meets with Israel’s Saudi Detainee | ASHARQ AL-AWSAT English Archive 2005 -2017

Riyadh, Asharq Al-Awsat- A lawyer and head of the human right organization, the Mandela Institute recently met with Saudi national in prisoner in Israel Abdul Rahman al-Atwi.

Lawyer Buthaina Duqmaq described al-Atwi as” enigmatic” adding that “he seemed to be mentally ill”.

Duqmaq after meeting with the detainee informed his lawyer in Israel Katib al-Shamari, that his client seemed to be in a complex mental state and that he exhibited extreme reservation in providing the information that the institute required, which corroborates claims made by al-Shamari to Asharq Al-Awsat in a previous report.

The Mandela Institute, told al-Shamari that he would be provide with a detailed report of the prisoner’s health and legal status within the next few days. At a press conference yesterday, Al-Shamari refuted the claim that his relationship has been terminated with the institute, adding that, ‘relationships are still maintained with his [Abdul Rahman al-Atwi] family as well as with the lawyer following up on his case in the occupied territories’.

Al-Atwi was a soldier for the Saudi civil defense before seeking employment at a local Mecca business.

He has nine brothers and a half-sister. Nearly a year has elapsed since he was imprisoned by Israeli authorities after being accused of illegally crossing the Egyptian border.
