BEIRUT (AFP) – Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah has vowed more action in the Lebanese opposition’s campaign against the Western-backed government of Prime Minister Fuad Siniora.

He said in a wide-ranging interview with Hezbollah television Al-Manar late Friday that the opposition would announce Saturday or Sunday plans for “major and effective action” but declined to give details.

Nasrallah however said that opposition leaders wanted their campaign to remain peaceful and not to lead to “sectarian trouble or a civil war.”

“I am sure that the opposition will achieve its goals,” Nasrallah said. “I call on all Lebanese to join this action.”

Hezbollah-led demonstrators, grouping Christian and pro-Syrian Muslim groups, have been besieging Lebanese government offices in the heart of Beirut for 51 days in a bid to topple Siniora’s administration.

On Friday, opposition MP Ali Khreiss said protest organisers were considering calling an indefinite strike to press their demands.

The opposition has been calling for early elections to end the political crisis which has paralysed the government for weeks.

The last elections in 2005, which followed the withdrawal of Syrian troops from Lebanon after a military presence of almost three decades, were won by an anti-Damascus coalition.
