GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) – Hamas officials will head to Cairo to discuss an Egyptian-mediated truce with Israel.

Gaza-based Hamas spokesman Ayman Taha says the Hamas officials will listen to Egyptian mediators and then discuss with senior members what position to take.

Egyptian officials are mediating between Hamas and Israel to secure a truce in Gaza.

Israel’s envoy left Egypt on Thursday after conveying his country’s position.

Negotiations are faltering over each side’s demands. Israel wants Hamas halt weapons smuggling and release a captive Israeli soldier. Hamas wants Israel to lift its blockade of Gaza that has locked-in territory’s residents and led to widespread shortages.

The Hamas officials are from the militant group’s main bureau in Syria.
