Gaza – Gaza Strip’s ruling authority Hamas announced that it has finalized its new charter draft and has distributed it to party political members and the public advisory council.

The announcement comes a few days before it is expected for the charter to be publicly reviewed at a press conference scheduled in the Qatari capital, Doha.

Well-informed Hamas sources told Asharq Al-Awsat that the charter will be passed by the current Hamas administration, led by Khaled Mashal, after previous expectations pointed to a post-election release.

Mashal’s administration will end its term by the end of April after which the bloc will hold elections.

The charter’s release was initially set for after the elections, however the movement saw that amid hints of efforts shifting towards restarting the peace process, an early announcement was in order.

Promising rhetoric has been recently used by Arab states and the United States administration on rebooting the peace process on the Palestine-Israeli conflict.

Sources confirmed a number of Hamas leaders will be attending the upcoming Doha conference to announce the new political charter. They added that the charter encloses new conditions in keep with ongoing regional developments, and is more leniently phrased than Hamas’s previous stances.

It will be published in both Arabic and English and will be distributed among Arab and international sides after the conference, sources said.

More so, the charter is expected to carry a number of messages to different Arab states and the international community. The amendment addresses many movement policies on regional and global levels.

Such a shift is meant to counter Israel’s relentless efforts to incite international aversion against the Palestinian movement on the premise that its founding charter calls for the destruction of Israel.

The Hamas 1987 former charter calls for the eventual obliteration or dissolution of Israel.
