New Delhi, Asharq Al-Awsat- Gunmen have killed one scientist and injured three others fatally in an attack at the prestigious Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore, India.

Police commissioner Ajay Kumar of Bangalore told the media that the attackers arrived in an ambassador car and opened fire with an automatic rifle on scientists who had attended an international conference at one of the top Indian science universities. MC Puri, a professor at the Indian Institute of Science died from his injuries on the way to hospital.

Police have indicated that the militant group Lashkar-E-Taiba may be responsible for the gun raid, as it resembled other attacks carried out by the group. Security authorities have stated that the recent arrest of some Harkat-ul-Jihad militants from Delhi had indicated that radicals could strike Bangalore over the coming days. Bangalore is a high technology hub in the south of India home to more than 1,500 information technology companies, among them dozens of global firms, over the coming days. Police have cordoned the area where the attack took place and have launched searches for the attackers.
