London, Asharq Al-Awsat- Iyad Allawi has not ruled out participating in the new Iraqi government but denied holding detailed discussions with Iraqi president Jalal Talbani about the formation of a new cabinet or having been offered a certain portfolio.

“We have not held any negotiations. Everyone is awaiting the official election results. But there is an agreement about the necessity to create a government of national unity, the head of the Iraqi National list told Asharq al Awsat Thursday.

Asked whether he would consider participating in the next government, the former Iraqi premier said, “We shall see… this depends on the government’s program and the agreements with other political groups”. “We are an important part of the political game in Iraq and we will not leave the country as it is.”

Meanwhile, Hussein Hindawi, head of the independent electoral commission indicated Thursday that “a meeting will be held [on Friday] to discuss whether to announce the election results including all the challenges. We expect to announce the results within the next few days.”
