Srinagar, India, Asharq Al-Awsat- For the first time in the history of the disputer territory, a woman carried out a suicide attack close to a national highway in Indian-administered Kashmir .

The blast occurred a few meters away from the Srinagar-Jammu national highway in Avantipur in the district of Pulwama, 30 km of the capital, according to police sources. It is thought the explosive device went off before the woman reached her intended target.

The highway is crowded with relief convoys transporting aid to areas affected by Saturday’s devastating earthquake. Policemen who rushed to the scene found three grenades and the woman’s body parts.

A caller allegedly from Jaish e-Mohammad told local news agency KNS that the woman was a member of the group and that her intended target was an army convoy moving along the highway.

It was unclear who the woman was with some paramilitary sources identifying her as Jahan Ara Begum and others claiming she was called Hafsa. No one was injured in the attack.

The United Jihad Council, an umbrella organization of several militant groups, based in Pakistani Kashmir announced on Sunday that it was suspending its military operations in the wake of the deadly earthquake, which killed at least 40,000 in Pakistan and 1,300 in India.
