BAGHDAD (AP) – Two Iraqi military officials say at least 11 soldiers have been killed in a blast north of Baghdad.

The two officials say the soldiers were killed Friday at about 10 a.m. in an area just east of the northern Iraqi city of Mosul. It’s a region where Iraqi forces routinely carry out controlled detonations to destroy weapons confiscated during raids.

The military officials say it appears the blast occurred while the soldiers were preparing materials for a controlled explosion.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to release the information.
