Brussels, Asharq Al-Awsat – Maja Kocijancic, the spokeswoman of Catherine Ashton, the EU’s commissioner for foreign affairs, has stated to Asharq Al-Awsat that the European Commission is still waiting for the details of the nuclear agreement reached following talks between Brazil, Turkey, and Iran yesterday.

She added: “We are watching what is happening and waiting for the details. If the agreement includes a formula identical to the International Atomic Energy Agency’s one of last October, then we say we welcome this development. But we also say at the same time that this will not solve the entire problem, especially in view of the international community’s interest in the need to find a solution for the Iranian nuclear program crisis.”

Asked whether the Brazilian-Turkish role has become the alternative to other roles from the international groups, the spokeswoman said: The EU is discussing and examining this dossier with various parties. We have told everyone of our stand and countries who are members of the group of six reflect this. We received information from Brazil and Turkey that Tehran was ready to negotiate but we believe that these negotiations have not brought us to the end of the road.

On his part, Antonio Semantouri, head of the European Center for Foreign Relations, told Asharq al-Awsat that the EU did not have a hard-line policy with Iran and always preferred dialogue and diplomacy but this road has not been successful in solving the crisis. At the daily press conference at the commission’s headquarters in Brussels, the EU Commission considered the nuclear fuel swap agreement a possible step on the right road “but the details of the agreement should be known.” He added that Catherine Ashton was ready to meet the Iranian authorities for a “comprehensive and complete” solution for the confrontation over the program of enriching Iran’s uranium.
