DUBAI, United Arab Emirates, (AP) – A massive traffic accident involving dozens of vehicles killed three people and injured more than 300 others on Tuesday, a police official said.

More than a dozen cars burst into flames, turning the highway between the United Arab Emirates’ two main cities into an inferno during morning rush hour, said Col. Osman al-Tamimi of the Abu Dhabi Police Department.

Thick fog and poor visibility caused the accident, he said.

Authorities said it was one of the worst accidents in the Gulf country’s history.

Traffic in the Emirates has increased dramatically in recent years as the country’s economy has boomed, especially in the city of Dubai, which has become the de facto business center of the Middle East.
