CAIRO (AP) — Egypt’s military council has pledged to secure Saudi diplomatic missions in the country, an effort to repair relations with the kingdom a day after it shut its embassy in Cairo.

Saudi Arabia recalled its ambassador to Cairo for consultations after what it said were “unjustified” protests by Egyptians that violated the missions and threatened staff.

Demonstrators were complaining about the arrest of an Egyptian lawyer in Saudi Arabia.

It’s the worst diplomatic spat between Egypt and Saudi Arabia in decades.

In a statement Sunday, Egypt’s ruling military council criticized the demonstrators. It said the protests were “irresponsible behaviour” that should not shake strategic Egyptian-Saudi relations.

It said it is committed to securing the missions.
