DUBAI, United Arab Emirates, (AP) – Authorities in Dubai are still investigating the death of a British tourist in the Gulf emirate although they insist the man died from suffocating on his own vomit in custody, not beatings.

A statement from the Office of Dubai Public Prosecution has confirmed the medical examiner’s conclusion that the Briton, identified as Lee Bradley Brown, died of suffocation last week. He was arrested earlier this month for allegedly assaulting a hotel worker in Dubai’s luxury Burj Al Arab hotel.

Brown’s family told local media he was beaten. The family is in Dubai to claim the body, Monday’s statement said.

Authorities denied Brown was physically assaulted in custody, but said the investigators take allegations of detainee abuse seriously.
