Beirut- Differences that emerged lately between Lebanese political blocs concerning the endorsement of former Prime Minister Saad Hariri to MP Michel Aoun for president have narrowed on Sunday after Speaker Nabih Berri, the leading opponent of Aoun’s candidacy, said he would attend the election session, while Secretary General of the so-called Hezbollah Hassan Nasrallah announced he would accept to nominate Hariri for the prime ministry post, describing his decision as a “sacrifice.”

The latest political developments enhanced the country’s optimistic mood for the election of Aoun, and were reflected by most parliamentary blocs ahead of the Oct. 31 session set to fill in the 2 and half years presidential vacuum.

On Sunday, Berri reiterated his decision not to boycott the next parliamentary session to elect a new president, revealing that he had told Aoun during their last meeting in Ain al-Tineh last week: “Obstructing the elections’ quorum was in my hand. But, I have not and will not do it.”

Berri, who is in Geneva presiding the consultative meeting of the Parliamentary Union of OIC Member states at the headquarters of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, condemned the objections against the “basket of agreements” he had previously requested as a condition to agree on the next president.

He said: “I had requested an agreement on the coming government and a new electoral law to be implemented as soon as a president is elected.”

“We hear now there is an agreement between parties on the next prime minister, and even the lineup of the next 24 member-cabinet,” he said, adding there is even a hidden agreement to hold the next parliamentary elections based on the old 1960 law.

Meanwhile, Nasrallah announced on Sunday his commitment to the candidacy of Aoun was final. “The entire Loyalty to Resistance bloc will attend the session and all the members will vote for General Aoun,” Nasrallah said.

Commenting on the party’s disputes with Berri’s Amal Movement concerning the election of Aoun, Nasrallah said the relations with the Amal Movement is “deep, strong and firm and it won’t be affected by all these scenarios that some have fabricated.”
