BAGHDAD, Iraq, (AP) – An Iraqi court sentenced a Libyan member of al-Qaeda in Iraq to death after he admitted taking part in eight attacks on U.S.-led coalition forces and Iraqi targets, the U.S. military said Saturday.

The Central Criminal Court found the man guilty of terrorism and sentenced him to the death penalty on Dec. 6, the military said in a statement. The unidentified Libyan, who was captured during a raid, took part in attacks in which small arms, rocket-propelled grenades and missiles were used. Executions in Iraq are by hanging.

The court sentenced 15 other security detainees, mostly Iraqis, in the first week of December for weapons violations, illegal border crossing and other crimes. Three received prison sentences of 20 years.

Two of the insurgents were from Saudi Arabia, and two were from Syria, the U.S. military said.

The Iraq Study Group report, which makes recommendations for new U.S. policy in Iraq, concluded that al-Qaeda in Iraq is now largely made up of Sunni Arabs. Some 1,300 foreign fighters are believed to support the militant group or be available to carry out suicide bombings, the study found.
