BAGHDAD,(AP)- Under intense U.S. pressure, the head of Iraq”s constitution commission said on Monday that the group could finish the constitution by August 15 if political leaders overcome their differences.

&#34We can say that on August 15 we can be able to conclude the constitution,&#34 commission chairman Humam Hammoudi said. &#34But under one condition: that the leaders of the bloc meet on August 5, and on August 12 we receive the results of their discussion. If there are any points of disagreement among the leaders, it will be brought forward to the National Assembly in order for them to solve it.&#34

Hammoudi had said his needed more time to finish but came under heavy pressure from U.S. and Iraqi leaders not to ask parliament for an extension of the deadline to finish the draft.
