DETROIT (AP) – Authorities say the Nigerian man charged with trying to blow up a U.S. airliner on Christmas has arrived at the Detroit courthouse to hear the charges.

A dark Chevy Suburban drove into an underground entrance to the downtown courthouse about 10:40 a.m. (1540 GMT). The vehicle was led and followed by police cars with flashing lights and short siren blasts.

The U.S. Marshals Service says Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab was inside the sport utility vehicle. He will be arraigned on six charges Friday afternoon. The most severe carries up to life in prison, the attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction.

The government says the 23-year-old Abdulmutallab tried to blow up an Amsterdam-to-Detroit flight by igniting an explosive under his clothes.
