BAGHDAD, (AP)-Candidates endorsed by anti-U.S. cleric Muqtada al-Sadr say they will appeal the results of last weekend’s election results in Baghdad and other provinces because of voting irregularities.

A spokesman for the candidates’ party told reporters Saturday during a press conference in Baghdad that they would also appeal results in the provinces of Najaf, Maysan and Qadisiyah.

Spokesman Tahir al-Kinani says there were big differences in the results released by Iraq’s electoral commission and those figures gathered by their election observers.

Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki’s allies swept to victory in the vote for powerful local councils, placing the prime minister in a strong position before parliamentary elections late this year.
