Ramallah- The Palestinian government has warned of the dangerous Israeli escalation against Palestinian prisoners and called for a prompt international intervention to put an end to the “series of raids, torture and oppressive measures in Israeli prisons.”

Yusuf Mahmoud, spokesman for the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank, declared in a statement on Thursday that the national accord government is anxiously following the dangerous procedures adopted by the occupation against inmates.

The government has renewed demands for the international community to immediately interfere to force Israel to stop assaulting inmates, according to Mahmoud.

The Palestinian government also holds Israel responsible for endangering the lives of inmates, added the statement.

The Israeli Prison Service (IPS) stormed on Thursday section 13 of the Nafha Prison, torturing inmates and hitting them. These measures came after rising tension as a result of the stabbing of two Israeli guards.

Palestinian Committee of Prisoners’ Affairs head Issa Qaraqe held the IPS and the Israeli government response for the dangerous escalation.

He said in a statement that “IPS officials conducted an unprecedented raid, forcing the Palestinian prisoners to fully undress, leading them outside of the section in the cold weather, also searching and destroying their personal belongings.”

He described the situation as “unbearable”, noting that the IPS has banned family and lawyer visitations to prisoners.

Qaraqe called on the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to immediately intervene and visit the prison.

“Palestinian prisoners will conduct group protests and hunger strikes if humiliating Israeli raids continue against them,” the statement added.

For its part, the Palestinian Society Prisoner’s Club warned that the situation in prisons will deteriorate if the oppressive Israeli measures continue.
