London, Asharq Al-Awsat- Dr. Zaki Badawi, an influential cleric and one of the most prominent faces of moderate Islam in Britain, died in London on Tuesday.

The 83 year old had been speaking at the Islamic Finance Summit in London.

“He was at a conference at the time, he collapsed, an ambulance came and took him to hospital,” a representative for the Muslim College said. His funeral is scheduled to take place on Friday.

The Muslim Council of Britain, the country’s main Muslim umbrella group, deplored the loss of Dr. Badawi.

Dr. Badawi received a knighthood last year and had held a variety of posts during his time in the UK , most recently as Director of the Muslim College in London .

The former Imam at Regent’s Park mosque in the capital was born in 1922 in Egypt. He studied at al Azhar University before coming to Britain for the first time in 1951.
