BAGHDAD, Iraq, AP -Bomb blasts and shootings killed at least three people in Baghdad and north of the Iraqi capital Sunday, including an Education Ministry official and an elderly woman, police said. At least 22 people were wounded.

Insurgents also fired a mortar into Baghdad’s heavily fortified Green Zone, home to the U.S. Embassy and Iraqi government. The explosion that rocked Baghdad shortly before midday but caused no casualties, the U.S military said.

A suicide attacker detonated his explosives-packed belt in western Baghdad’s Baiyaa district near a police patrol, killing an elderly woman and wounding eight people, including three policemen, police said.

Drive-by gunmen also fired at two men in a truck in Baghdad’s southern Dora neighborhood, killing one and seriously wounding another, police said.

Another group of armed men in a speeding car killed Education Ministry official Karim Selman al-Zaidi in Baqouba, 35 miles northeast of Baghdad, Diyala police’s Joint Coordination Center said.

A bomb rigged to a motorcycle exploded shortly before 7 a.m. outside a local restaurant near central Baghdad’s Tahrir Square and wounded nine people, police said.

The owner of the restaurant, which sells traditional Iraqi sweets, was among those wounded in the attack, which happened as people were buying breakfast. Two Feb. 7 bombings minutes apart in the same area killed seven people.

Another bomb-rigged motorcycle targeted a passing police patrol near a children’s amusement park in Baghdad, but caused no casualties.

A roadside bomb targeted a police patrol near a mosque in northern Baghdad, wounding four people and damaging their vehicle, police said.

Police found the bodies of at least five men, each of whom had been bound, shot repeatedly and dumped in different parts of the Iraqi capital. The identities of the victims was not immediately clear, nor was the motive for the attack.

In the insurgent stronghold of Ramadi, 70 miles west of Baghdad, an explosion wounded two civilians and damaged eight shops, witnesses said. The cause of the blast was unknown.

An Iraqi detainee died after being assaulted by several prisoners in western Baghdad’s Abu Ghraib prison, the military said Sunday.

The victim, 53, died on Saturday “as a result of complications from an assault by an unknown number of detainees,” according to a statement.

U.S. medical personnel tried to resuscitate the man and inserted a breathing tube, but he failed to respond. A military criminal investigation is underway.

More than 14,000 detainees are being held at coalition detention facilities. Many are believed to be Sunni Arabs rounded up by U.S. and Iraqi forces on suspicion of supporting Sunni-led insurgent groups. Other detainees are being held at Iraqi prisons around the country.
