MANAMA, Bahrain (AP) – A parliament group is appealing to Bahrain’s king to impose martial law after a month of clashes and anti-government protests in the tiny Gulf island nation.

The state Bahrain News Agency says the bloc also is seeking a curfew and the dispatch of army units around the strategic country, which is home to the U.S. Navy’s 5th Fleet.

Monday’s appeal comes a day after protesters blocked main highways and battles erupted on the campus of the main university, which has suspended classes.

It’s unclear whether Bahrain’s king will heed the call for the military clampdown. Bahrain’s parliament is left with only pro-government lawmakers after opposition members resigned to protest violence against demonstrators.
