Cairo- Egyptian President Abd al-Fattah al-Sisi and Bahrain’s King Hamad bin Isa al-Khalifa held talks at Al-Ittihadiya Palace in Cairo, discussing ways to enhance relations and expand cooperation between Egypt and Bahrain in various fields.

President Sisi welcomed King Hamad, expressing delight at the visit which, he said, will consolidate mutual interests, strengthen bilateral relations and bolster cooperation regarding regional and international issues.

President Sisi hailed the genuine stances taken by the Kingdom of Bahrain, led by HM the King, in support of Egypt and its people as well as honorable role in pushing the march of pan-Arab action forward.

King Hamad attended a dinner banquet, in his honor, hosted by Sisi at Al-Ittihadiya Palace. The event was attended by senior officials from the Egyptian Government and members of the accompanying delegation.

Following the reception, a joint session between the two leaders addressed bilateral cooperation on various economic and political levels, as well as the latest developments in the region. The visit comes within the Egyptian-Bahraini coordinative framework on regional policies.

In a foreign ministry statement, Egypt condemned what it considered “attempts to destabilize the security of the Kingdom of Bahrain.”

The condemnation followed a prior report made by the Bahraini interior ministry on the arrest of a terrorist cell plotting a number of attacks.

Assassinating prominent figures in the country, the killing of a number of Bahraini security personnel in addition to attacking several vital targets in the Kingdom, were among the objectives the terror ring aimed at accomplishing.

Egypt’s statement relayed “full solidarity with the Kingdom of Bahrain in the face of terrorism and extremism targeting its stability, and support for all measures taken by Bahrain to neutralize terrorist organizations and networks, safeguarding its security and the safety of its citizens.”

The statement reiterated Egypt’s position on promoting the need to unite international counterterrorism efforts, and stressed the importance of finding a comprehensive strategy to stop the spread of terrorism, reduce its recruitment capacity and dry out its funding sources.
