Cairo, Asharq Al-Awsat – The Syrian ambassador to Cairo, Youssef Ahmed, strongly criticized comments made by Arab League Secretary-General Amr Musa on the situation in Syria. The Syrian ambassador said that Musa’s comments were imbalanced and ignored the foreign plots targeting Syria and its independence; he also warned against anybody “exploiting Syrian blood in order to serve private goals.” Arab League Secretary-General Amr Musa had described the situation in Syria as being ‘”dangerous and worrying”, voicing concern about the rising number of Syrian casualties and refugees.

Commenting on the Syrian ambassador’s statements, Amr Musa told Asharq Al-Awsat that he is not the only one in the world to hold this viewpoint. He also denounced the Syrian accusations that he was exploiting the situation in Syria to serve his own personal interests, stressing that “if what I said was a form of self-publicity regarding my intentions to run at the Egyptian presidential elections, then I must ask this; is the entire world intending to stand at the Egyptian presidential elections?”

Musa also confirmed to Asharq Al-Awsat that “there is an Arab country that has spoken with the Arab League about holding an Arab summit to monitor the situation in Syria; however we have not received any official requests in this regard.”

In the statement to the press made by Syrian ambassador to Egypt Youssef Ahmed, he also claimed that “Syria is continuing along the path of reform to meet the legitimate demands of its citizens, as well as carrying out its national duty to protect their lives and property, and combat the terrorism and extremism that is targeting Syria and its independence.”

The Syrian ambassador’s press statement also warned against external forces attempting to exploit “Syrian blood” for personal gain, or any attempts to implement a UN Security Council resolution targeting Syria.
