RAMALLAH, (Reuters) – Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas will on Sunday hold their first talks since Hamas routed Abbas’s Fatah group in Gaza, Palestinian and Egyptian officials said on Thursday.

An Egyptian official said the two men would meet at the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh in Egypt together with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and Jordan’s King Abdullah.

A Palestinian official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Reuters Olmert and Abbas would discuss “recent Palestinian developments as well as well as ways of reviving the peace process.”

Abbas’s media adviser, Nabil Amr, said a meeting would be held in Egypt next week, though Israeli officials could not confirm talks would be held.

Olmert and Abbas last met in April. Hamas Islamist forces on June 14 crushed Abbas’s Fatah group in the Gaza Strip following months of violence and clashes between the rival Palestinian groups.

Since then, Abbas has sacked a Hamas-led unity government and formed an emergency administration based in the West Bank city of Ramallah led by Prime Minister Salam Fayyad.

Olmert and Abbas had been due to meet in the West Bank weeks ago but these talks were called off amid Palestinian fighting, and Palestinian rocket attacks and Israeli attacks against Gaza militants.

Israel and most of the West had shunned the Hamas-led administration but maintained dialogue with the more moderate Abbas.

Israel on Wednesday launched its first contacts with the Palestinian government for many months with a telephone conversation between Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni and Fayyad.
