Washington D.C, Asharq Al-Awsat -a spokesperson for the Defence Security Cooperation Agency, an arm of the Defence Department confirmed on Tuesday that the Pentagon had notified the U.S Congress of its intention to sell military equipment to Saudi Arabia worth $ 2.1 billion.

Jose Ibarra, speaking to Asharq al Awsat, revealed that Congress had a 30-day limit to consider the proposed sale. If no objections are raised, the transaction will then go through, adding that the figures mentioned were only estimates.

In a press release published on its website, the Agency announced that largest deal would be worth $918 million. It would enable the US to assist with modernising the Saudi National Guard by providing it with military equipment, including 144 armoured personal carrier vehicles, 52 command and control vehicles, 3600 assault rifles, and 12 water cannon vehicles.

Valued at $401 million, the second proposed arm deal includes the sale of “165 Link 16 Multifunctional Information Distribution System/Low Volume Terminals which will increase pilot operational effectiveness by providing an at-a-glance portrayal of targets, threats, and friendly forces on an easy-to-understand relative position display” according to the press release.

The third deal, worth $760 million would ensure a continuation of contractor, technical services and logistics support for aircraft and missiles and other associated equipment.

According to a defence source, the proposed deal would strengthen the role of Saudi Arabia as a major regionally ally and a partner in the war on terror. It will also improve the military capabilities of the Saudi Arabia and enable to defeat those that endanger regional stability.
