The Peshmerga ministry spokesman Halgurd Hekmat revealed on Thursday that 1600 Peshmerga soldiers have been killed since the major offensive to regain the city of Mosul began on the 17th of October. Hikmat added that nearly 10,000 members of the Peshmerga were wounded in the fierce fighting that has been ongoing for the last six weeks in order to expel ISIS from Iraq’s second biggest city.

In addition to this, the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq said on Thursday that 2000 Iraqi soldiers had been killed in all parts of the country in November, and specifically in the battle to liberate Mosul from ISIS.

According to monthly figures issued by the mission, 1959 members of the security forces were killed and 450 were injured in the last month. These figures include the number of army personnel, members of the police force that are involved in the fighting, Peshmerga soldiers, Interior Ministry forces and paramilitary forces loyal to the government that were killed.

A UN statement also said that at least 926 civilians were killed, bringing the number of Iraqis killed in terrorist attacks and in the conflict last month to 2885 people.

The statement quoted Jan Kubis, the Special Representative and Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq, as saying “The casualty figures are staggering, with civilians accounting for a significant number of the victims.”
