Umayma: An Activist through Art

Riyadh, Asharq Al-Awsat – With its inherent conflict between creativity and application, sculpture is both an applied and virtual art. It also embodies the artist’s imagination. Umayma Hasb al Rassul, an artist and sculptor, expresses her ideas through stone. A graduate of the Fine Arts Faculty at the Sudanese University in 1994, she recently took part in an exhibition of Sudanese artists at the King Fahd Hall in Riyadh. Umayma is currently working in the National Museum in Khartoum.

Displaying immense talent, Umayma uses stone to simulate life and transform abstract notions into concrete objects. In her agile hand, the stone creatively takes on the attributes of many objects; at least, this is how you feel as you gaze at her artwork, which mixes stone, wood and other materials.

Sculpture, for Umayma, is a way of expressing her vision for society and concern for others around her. For example, she has sought to defend the rights of women through her artwork and has become somewhat of an activist. Women occupy a central part in her sculptures and have their own style and representation.

Through her work, Umayma seeks to symbolize various characters, ideas, issues, causes and daily worries. In addition, her projects have established new aesthetic values and incorporated many philosophical and mythical features.
