A Tunisian prisoner who faces a death sentence sat the first session of high-school exams for the second time in a row.

The prisoner who didn’t wish to reveal his identity applied for high school exams with an exceptional permission at the “Nazur” prison in the city of Bizerte, and hopes to receive his certificate along six other prisoners who are running for the same exam.

This is not the first time that prisoners facing severe sentences apply for high school exams. Another man who was sentenced to life had received his high school certificate two years ago.

In this context, sociology expert Mounira al-Rezqi said these attempts are better than waiting for death. According to Rezqi what they’re doing motivates them and gives them hope for life. She explained that chances for appeal and repeal can be possible in many cases and that many developments might suddenly emerge, and that is a shade of hope for them.

The ministry of education in Tunisia approves, in different social and health cases, many exceptional procedures that enable people to apply for high school exams.

This year, the ministry approved applications of 49 cases for font amendments, 10 cases for exams’ translation into French, and 149 cases for time extension. It is worth mentioning that tests for the first session of high school exams have kicked off on Wednesday, and will run till June 14, and the results are expected to be announced on June 23.
