Amman – Saddam Hussein’s granddaughter, Banan Hussein Kamel, a fashion designer living in Dubai, was awarded the best young designer at the Kurdish Newroz festival in Jordan.

The fourth Newroz festival, which concluded on Monday, was organized by Qandil organization at al-Ahliyya University in Amman. It included several events and fashion shows for Kurdish and other clothing.

Banan, who is the daughter of Hussein Kamel and Raghad Saddam Hussein, presented her own collection of dresses at the three-day festival. She said upon accepting her award that she believes in equality among Kurds and Arabs.

“We are all equal. There are no differences between us, whether you are a Kurd, Shi’ite or Sunni. I have two dreams: first, my career, second, I want Iraq to be united and go back to what it was like before,” she told Rudaw.

“The most important thing for me is to do something which I enjoy doing. I built this career with love,” she said.

A number of Kurdish and Arabic artists participated in the festival, including Iraqi singer Hatem al-Iraqi and Jordanian singer Diana Karazon.

Karazon and her mother, who is from Diyarbakir, and Miss Kurdistan beauty pageant winner, were among the panel of judges.

“I am very happy to be here today. I have come with my mother to take part in this sacred day, which is the feast of Newroz,” Karazon said.
