London- A consortium of British companies intends to start testing driverless cars on the United Kingdoms’ public roads in in 2019.

According to the BBC, the consortium will also start to try out trips of autonomous vehicles between London and Oxford. Each driverless car will have a human on board as well to intervene in the emergency cases.

The cars will communicate with each other about any hazards. Previous tests of driverless vehicles have mainly taken place at slow speeds and not on public roads.

The “Oxbotica Company”, which makes software for driverless vehicles, has made part of the driven consortium.

Prof Paul Newman, of Oxford University, said: “We’re moving from the running one autonomous vehicle to fleets of autonomous vehicles, which shares several data with one another, like: when, where, and why.”

The project is backed by an £8.6m government grant. An insurance company will also partake by assessing the risks involved at each stage of the journey.
