Sydney, London-A 76-year-old woman was rescued Sunday after being trapped for 20 hours on a small island with her two dogs as crocodile infested waters rose around her.

The woman from South Australia had got lost while walking in Western Australia’s remote Kimberley region, police said.

Her partner alerted authorities after people in the local caravan park searched on Saturday afternoon for several hours and couldn’t find her.

“The waters kept rising, so she made her way into the mangroves, and sheltered in the mangrove branches until the tide turned, and got to low tide,” Senior Sergeant Chris Fox said.

The tide receded but she walked in the wrong direction away from the camp and once again had to climb into the mangroves as the tide rose.

She cuddled her two dogs throughout the night while waters rose up to her neck. Unknown to her a 2.5 meter crocodile lives in the waterway where she was stranded.

Police found her Sunday morning in the mangrove trees still clinging to her dogs. Fox said when they told her about the crocodile she was “quite shocked” but otherwise she and her dogs are well.
