Pakistan Plans 60 Million Mobile and Phone Connections in New Year | ASHARQ AL-AWSAT English Archive 2005 -2017

Islamabad, Asharq Al-Awsat- Telephone and mobile phone connections are likely to rise up to 60 million from the existing 20 million by the end of 2006, says Telecommunications and Information Technology Minister Awais Leghari.

Policies of the government have brought a revolution in the telecommunication sector opening new avenues of services and offering employment opportunities to millions of people, Leghari said. He added that the number of telephone and mobile phone connections rose to 20 million from just two million within last few years and the government is trying to catch the 60 million figure.

The minister said the government was considering to install 1500 to 2000 new towers to expand telecom services and funding would come from Rupees 2 billion deposited by the companies as license fee.
