TEHRAN (AFP) – More than one quarter of young Iranians aged between 15 and 24 are unemployed, a top Iranian statistics official was quoted as saying by the Mehr news agency on Monday.

“Some 25.6 percent of Iranian youths aged 15 to 24 are employed. This figure is 28.9 percent in urban areas and 19.4 percent in rural areas,” Iran’s Statistics Centre head Mohammad Madad was quoted as saying.

Madad said the overall jobless rate for the entire active population in Iran was 11.9 percent.

Half of Iran’s 70 million population is under 30 and the legal working age is 15 years.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s economy policy has come under increasing fire not only from financial and economic experts but also from politicians.

Iran is also suffering rampant inflation which was running at more than 24 percent in April.
