G77 summit starts in Doha | ASHARQ AL-AWSAT English Archive 2005 -2017

DOHA,(KUNA) — Heads of state and government from 132 countries of the so-called Group of 77 (G77) and China, started a two-day summit here Wednesday.

The Amir of Qatar Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani will give an opening speech in which he is expected to call for strengthening efforts of development in the member countries.

The participants, meeting in the ever largest summit in the Middle East region, will also discuss the UN reforms, political matters and means to boost collective economic cooperation.

Kuwait is represented by H.H. The Prime Minister Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, who is representing H.H. The Amir Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah.

The Amir of Qatar is expected to propose the establishment of a fund whose major aim is to boost development in the developing countries. Qatar”s contribution to the fund is said to amount to USD 20 million.

The G77, established in 1964, is currently chaired by Jamaica.
