Cairo – Egyptian Minister of Investment and International Cooperation Sahar Nasr said on Thursday that her country was seeking to revive investments with Lebanon.

Speaking at the opening session of a meeting between Egyptian and Lebanese businessmen in Lebanon, Nasr said the gathering is of great importance as it discusses suggested initiatives to support both Egyptian and Lebanese economies.

The Egyptian government is keen on overcoming all challenges facing investors in Egypt, she said.

Nasr called on the private sector in both countries to play a more active role in promoting bilateral economic ties.

Lebanese Trade Minister Raed Khoury and Telecommunications Minister Jamal al-Jarrah were also present at the Egyptian-Lebanese Business Forum.

Also on Thursday, Nasr met with Chairman of the Investment Development Authority of Lebanon (IDAL) Nabil Itani.

The meeting touched on the means to boost economic and investment cooperation between the two countries ahead of the higher Egyptian-Lebanese committee meeting next month.

The meeting in March will be headed by the prime ministers of both countries and will witness the signing of several agreements and memoranda of accord, according to the minister.

Nasr stressed that Egypt sought stronger ties with Lebanon, asserting the need to refresh cooperation efforts between the ministry and IDAL under investment deals.

For his part, Itani reiterated the importance of Egyptian investments in Lebanon and called for more support for investors to promote trade between the two countries.

In an official statement issued ahead of her departure to Beirut on Thursday, the minister said: “The meeting is very important because it will establish the Council of Lebanese-Egyptian Businessmen, which will play an important role in increasing the exports to Africa through the initiative of ‘Egypt-Lebanon to Africa’ that will create a breakthrough in the Arab economy.”
