LONDON (AFP) – BAE Systems is set to build 72 Eurofighter Typhoon jets which the government has sold to Saudi Arabia, in a deal worth some 5.0 billion pounds, according to a press report.

Defence secretary Des Browne was ready to sign the contract and the sale could be announced as early as Wednesday, The Times newspaper reported Monday without citing its sources.

The contract was also expected to include a provision for BAE to provide long-term maintenance which could be worth another 5.0 billion pounds, the daily broadsheet added.

The deal should guarantee work for the 9,000 staff at BAE’s Warton factory in Lancashire, northwestern England, until about 2014, the report said.

The Typhoon Eurofighter is largely manufactured by defence and aerospace giant BAE Systems in partnership with Italy, Germany and Spain.
