Amman, Asharq Al-Awsat- The Amman-based general federation of Arab businessmen has urged Arab governments and investment institutions to increase the number of foodstuffs projects in the Arab world.

An official memorandum issued by the federation said the imports of the Arab world of foodstuffs from abroad remarkably increased in the last five years amounting to $20 billion.

The memorandum noted that the volume of the Arab exports of foodstuffs currently amounts to $5 billion per year.

‘this means that there is a difference of $15 billion between the value of imports and the value of exports’ said the memorandum, underlining the importance of forging an Arab strategy for implementing joint industrial foodstuffs projects so as to meet the requirements of the Arab world in this respect.

The memorandum stressed the importance of implementing joint projects for production of wheat, grains, meat and cheese.
