Abu Dhabi, Asharq Al-Awsat- Alshaya Group’s was awarded the title of “Retail Company of the Year” at the recent Arabian Business Awards held at Emirates Palace Hotel in Abu Dhabi.

The Award comes as the company’s fashion, health and beauty, and food and beverage business has grown to include 1,200 stores and 14,000 employees, in 12 countries, representing 42 of the world’s most famous brands including Starbucks, Debenhams, H&M and Boots.

Mohammed Alshaya, Chief Executive Officer of M.H. Alshaya, the company’s retail arm, said the accolade reflects the company’s success in developing the service sector in the Middle East.

“We have a huge vision for M.H. Alshaya and the high profile brands we represent – while this award celebrates our success, we feel we have only just started.

“We are a service-led regional economy and growing very fast. This award recognises how important this sector has become to the Middle East.

“If we are to maintain our economic growth, far more people, especially our youth, need to take on service sector jobs and careers. We should be encouraging our young people to value work, whether it is serving Starbucks coffee or managing a retail store. This is a very common part of growing up in other parts of the world but not necessarily in the Middle East.

“This is one of the region’s main challenges – millions of jobs have to be created across the region in the next 10 years. The service sector can help provide these jobs, but it is absolutely imperative that the Arab youth develop a work ethic that is hinged on pride in serving customers.

“I am hopeful this award will highlight the importance of this issue and show our young people that a work ethic and being part of a successful service company is exciting, fun and fulfilling.”

Alshaya Group was one of 12 businesses and individuals presented with Arabian Business Awards.
