Moscow-Saint Petersburg has witnessed new operations to arrest members of Ḥizb at-Taḥrīr (Party of Liberation), which is classified as a terrorist organization.

The Federal Security Service in the city announced in an official statement that the arrests came in line with a criminal case on the formation of terrorist cells belonging to the organization.

Russian security agencies have previously arrested suspects from the group. According to Interfax Agency, security forces have captured seven members from Ḥizb at-Taḥrīr in June 2014, April 2015, and June 2015.

All of the detainees have been accused of organizing terrorist activities.

In 2015, the Military Court in Russia tried many members and their sentences ranged between 12 and 18 years of prison.

These severe punishments were issued based on the dangerous role played by Ḥizb at-Taḥrīr during the the Soviet era and the party’s constant calls to topple the ruling systems in the region of Central Asia for the purpose of establishing a Unified Islamic Caliphate.

According to a decision issued by the Russian Supreme Court in 2003, this party has been classified as a terrorist organization and its activities have been banned on all Russian territories.
