Cairo- A key two-day meeting focusing on ways of combating the scourge of terrorism in the Arab region concluded Tuesday in Cairo.

Egyptian Minister of Social Solidarity and Head of Executive Bureau of the Arab Social Affairs Ministers’ Council Dr. Ghada Wali chaired the session, which was attended by senior officials representing Arab ministries of social affairs, justice and youth.

The meeting followed the recommendations of the Arab Summit, which was held in Jordan on combating terrorism and achieving development.

Arab officials meeting in the Egyptian capital collectively condemned a spate of recent “terrorist attacks” that hit Arab countries and other parts of the world, including Barcelona, Marseille and Finland.

In closing remarks, the officials denounced all “terrorist” acts irrespective of where they take place, saying the scourge is “not linked to any faith or origin.”

The officials added that it was imperative for all Arab institutions to work closely with a special committee dealing with countering terrorism, where a plan of action will be devised.

They urged international community and organizations to step up concerted efforts to combat terrorism, address its causes and dry up its funding sources.

They pointed out that “these brutal crimes call for extra cooperation on the part of the international community to fight and destroy terrorism.”

An Arab task-force was set up to draw up a work-plan on the implementation of the Arab Declaration theme “Supporting Arab Work to eliminate terrorism.”

The panel would coordinate with the Nayef Arab University for Security Sciences (NAUSS), Al-Azhar, the Arab Labor Organization, the Arab Parliament, the Arab Information Ministerial Council’s technical secretariat and other specialized think tanks.

Wali supported a proposal by Jordanian Ambassador to Egypt and Permanent Representative to the Arab League Ali Al Ayed to issue a statement of solidarity, on behalf of the countries participating in the meeting, with the European countries that were recently subjected to terrorist attacks.

In this context, she suggested handing overt letters of solidarity with Spain and Finland in the face of the two terrorist incidents, to the embassies of the two countries in Cairo to reflect “our feelings in rejecting these barbarous acts”.
