Cairo – Arab League Secretary General Ahmad Abul Gheith will designate his envoy to Libya upon his return from New York, where he participates in the U.N. General Assembly sessions.

Sources told Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper on Saturday that Abul Gheith will lead an Arab ministerial meeting, on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly, to discuss situation in the region and nominate his special envoy to Libya.

U.N. Special Envoy to Libya, Martin Kobler, met with Abul Gheith in Cairo on Saturday.

The meeting fell within efforts of the U.N. mission in Libya to help Libyan factions implement a comprehensive political agreement.

In remarks following the meeting, Kobler said talks with Abul Gheith focused on the means to resolve the crisis in Libya, by unifying the different political factions.

He also stressed the need to reach a comprehensive peace agreement, with the participation of Libya’s neighbors, including Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria and Italy.

Kobler also highlighted the need to promote the role of the international community in paving the way for peace in the war-torn country.

The international envoy added that his visit to Cairo was aimed at meeting with Abul Gheith and other senior officials, including the head of Libyan House of Representatives Ageela Saleh, and the head of the presidential council, Fayez Al-Sarraj.
