Cairo – Secretary General of the Arab League Ahmed Abul Gheit stressed that the organization is a “means to unite Arabs.”

He said from Alexandria University: “The Arab League is passing through the most difficult phase since its creation due to the collapse of some Arab countries, such as Libya, Syria and Iraq.”

The Arab League’s role is not solely political, but it plays economic, social and legal roles.

He explained that the League was born before the United Nations, European Union and African Union.

“Some Arab countries have been destroyed, such as Iraq that is being torn apart by terrorism and civil war,” continued Abul Gheit.

“Yemen has also witnessed the emergence of terror” and its people are suffering from diseases, such as cholera and polio, he lamented.

Syria meanwhile is facing destruction that needs 900 million dollars for reconstruction, he stated. Add to that the displacement of its people, as 11 million have been dispersed all over the world.

“The Arab League is a reflection of the Arab countries,” he declared.

“If the Arab countries are strong and capable, then so is the Arab League,” Abul Gheit stressed.

Furthermore, he announced that the organization “plays a major role” in confronting powerful players in the region, who “look down on Arabs and seek to control the area.”
