Cairo – Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Aboul Gheit has received strong support from Arab leaders ahead of the Arab Summit that will be held in Nouakchott, Mauritania, on the 25th and 26th of July.
Aboul Gheit met on Tuesday with Saudi Ambassador to Egypt Ahmed Abdulaziz Kattan at the headquarters of the Arab League Secretariat.

A statement issued by the Saudi embassy said the visit came in the wake of the appointment of Aboul Gheit as Arab League secretary general in July. The officials discussed issues of common interest, including the upcoming Arab Summit, the statement added.

Kattan expressed the support of the Arab League permanent Saudi delegation to the new secretary general, adding that Aboul Gheit’s mission was to work towards the achievement of goals development of Arab states.

In the same context, Oman Ambassador Ali bin Ahmed bin Hareb Al Isaei presented his credentials as the Sultanate’s permanent representative to the secretary general of the Arab League at the organization’s headquarters on Tuesday.

The officials discussed ways of joint cooperation and enhancement of existing relations between the Sultanate of Oman and the Arab League.

The ambassador conveyed to Aboul Gheit greetings of Yusuf bin Alawi bin Abdullah, Omani minister of foreign affairs. He also expressed his country’s keenness on boosting cooperation between Arab states and rejecting all conflicts that could hamper the Arab consensus.

Meanwhile, intensive meetings were held on Tuesday at the Arab League headquarters in preparation for the Arab Summit that will be held later this month.

Aboul Gheit met with the head of the Arab Parliament, Ahmed bin Mohammed Al-Jarwan, with whom he discussed the means to promote cooperation between the Arab parliament and the Arab League Secretariat.
Aboul Gheit stressed the Arab parliament’s important role in achieving the interests of the Arab states, adding that promoting collaboration between the two organizations would further consolidation joint Arab cooperation.

Meanwhile, United Nations Special Representative for Libya Martin Kobler stressed the importance of maintaining cooperation between the U.N. and the Arab League in order to achieve stability and security in Libya and help the country fight terrorism.

In remarks following his meeting with Aboul Gheit on Tuesday, Kobler said that the situation in Libya was utterly unsatisfactory, stressing the need to lift the ban on arming the Libyan army to improve security conditions in the North African country. Kobler added that his talks with Abul Ghait were constructive.
